Despite high winds and intermittent rain squalls, it did not prevent 12 members of the Friends of Ilkley Moor and Ilkley U3A joining the Archaeology Trail on Rombalds Moor – the fourteenth event in this year’s Friends Events & Learning Programme.
The Trail, led by Colin Beecham of the Friends, started at 2pm from the Cow & Calf on Sunday and lasted about 2.5 hours and visited amongst other sites, the Pancake Stone, the Idol Stone, the Haystack Stone – all showing carvings originating from the Bronze Age, approximately 4,000 years ago, ending at the Backstone Beck hut circle.
The party enjoyed the very informative walk despite being battered by the high wind on the upper slopes.
Picture shows Colin Beecham pointing out the distinctive Cup & Rings markings on the large Haystack Stone.
Information of future events can be downloaded from the Friends website www.ilkleymoor.org or the Events & Learning Programme can be collected from the Ilkley Information Office, shops and cafes in the Town.
